Spravato (Esketamine) Treatment
A Thoughtful Next Step When Depression Hasn’t Improved.
A Different approach to depression
How Spravato Works
Spravato works differently from conventional antidepressants. While many traditional medications act on serotonin or norepinephrine, Spravato targets a receptor involved in glutamate signaling—a system that helps brain cells communicate and supports learning and memory.
Glutamate plays a role in neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt and form new connections.
Spravato may help support this process, strengthening connections involved in mood and emotional well-being

FAQs
Your Questions, Answered.
What is Spravato®?
Spravato is a prescription esketamine nasal spray approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression. It is administered under medical supervision at a certified treatment center.
How is Spravato different from traditional antidepressants?
Many traditional antidepressants act on serotonin or norepinephrine. Spravato acts on the glutamate system, offering a different approach when previous treatments haven’t provided enough relief.
What is the difference between Spravato and IV ketamine?
Spravato contains esketamine and is administered through the nose. IV ketamine is delivered through an infusion. Spravato is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression; IV ketamine’s use for depression is off-label.
What is neuroplasticity, and how does it relate to Spravato?
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to adapt and form connections. Research suggests ketamine-related treatments may support this process through glutamate signaling.
What does “treatment-resistant depression” mean?
It generally means depression hasn’t improved adequately after at least two antidepressant trials at appropriate doses and durations. It does not mean you have run out of options.
How should I prepare for treatment?
Arrange transportation home. Avoid food for at least two hours and liquids for at least 30 minutes beforehand. Review your medications with your clinician; don’t stop them on your own.
How is Spravato administered?
You use the nasal spray yourself under a healthcare professional’s direct supervision. It is not a take-home treatment.
How long will I be at MedHaus for each session?
Monitoring lasts at least two hours after dosing.
Can I listen to music or bring a blanket?
Ask our team about bringing headphones, calming music, or a favorite blanket. We can help you plan for a comfortable visit.
Can I drive or return to work after treatment?
Arrange a ride home and plan to rest afterward. Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform activities requiring full alertness until the next day after a restful sleep
How soon might I notice an improvement?
Some patients notice changes early; others need several weeks. Your response is assessed over the initial four-week course.
How often will I need Spravato treatments?
For treatment-resistant depression, the usual schedule is:
- Weeks 1–4: Twice weekly.
- Weeks 5–8: Once weekly.
- Week 9 onward: Weekly or every other week, depending on your response.
Will MedHaus coordinate with my psychiatrist or therapist?
With your permission, we can discuss coordination with your existing providers to support a consistent treatment plan.
